It was a bright and peaceful Saturday morning. The sky was painted in soft hues of orange and pink as the sun slowly rose, spreading its gentle warmth. Birds chirped happily, their songs blending with the fresh morning air. In the backyard, little rabbits hopped around, their tiny noses twitching with curiosity. Chitra sat on her patio, a steaming cup of black coffee in her hands, enjoying the calmness of the moment. The aroma of coffee mixed with the sounds of nature made everything feel just right.
Suddenly, Chitra’s phone rang, breaking the serene silence. She picked it up and answered cheerfully, "Hello?"
"Hi Chitra, it’s me, Deepa. How are you?" came a familiar voice.
"I’m good, Deepa. How about you?" Chitra asked warmly.
Deepa sighed on the other end. "I’m feeling a bit stressed."
Chitra’s tone turned concerned. "What’s wrong, Deepa?"
Deepa hesitated for a moment before speaking. "You know, I was a dentist back in India. But here in America, I can’t practice without going back to college. I’d have to start all over again, and honestly, I don’t know if I can do it at my age. I’m already in my mid-30s, and with family responsibilities, it just feels... overwhelming."
Chitra listened carefully and then said gently, "I understand how you feel, Deepa. But remember, there’s no age limit to learning or pursuing your dreams."
Deepa sounded uncertain. "But what if I go to college and fail? What if I can’t balance my studies with my family responsibilities?"
Chitra smiled softly as she replied, "Deepa, try to think positively and have a growth mindset. What you focus on will increase. If you focus on negative thoughts, they will grow. But if you focus on positive thoughts, positivity will grow. When I first came to America, my English wasn’t good at all. But I decided to improve it. I went to college too in my mid-40s,, even though it felt challenging at first. It’s all about taking one step at a time."
Deepa asked hesitantly, "What if I don’t get a job even after getting an education?"
Chitra’s voice was calm and reassuring. "Deepa, our efforts are something we can control, but the outcomes are not always in our hands. Even during uncertain times, focusing on positive thoughts can make a big difference. When I started my career here, I struggled too. I worked long hours and studied for college and licensure exams for more than 14 hours a day. Eventually, due to severe health issues, I had to stop working altogether. But even then, I didn’t give up. I turned to my passion for reading and writing. And now, I’m truly happy doing what I love."
Deepa paused for a moment before asking another question. "Don’t you feel like all those years of hard work were wasted?"
Chitra shook her head firmly. "No, Deepa. Hard work and the lessons we learn never go to waste. Everything I learned during those tough years has helped me in my writing and in my own life. I’m using those experiences every day, and they’ve made me stronger and more content."
Chitra continued with a smile in her voice, "Life doesn’t always give us a straight path. There are ups and downs, but those challenges teach us to grow with resilience and keep moving forward."
Deepa’s voice softened with gratitude. "Thank you so much, Chitra. Talking to you has really helped me see things differently with more positivity. I’ll try to adopt this growth mindset."
"You’re welcome," Chitra replied warmly. "I’m always here if you need to talk."
As their call ended, Chitra leaned back in her chair, the warmth of her black coffee still comforting in her hands. The gentle morning seemed even more peaceful now as she reflected on their conversation. Deepa’s determination to face her challenges reminded her of how connected we all are, how simple words of kindness can lighten someone’s burden and brighten their day.
The sun climbed higher into the sky, casting a golden glow over the backyard where the rabbits continued their playful dance. Life’s challenges may not always be easy to understand, Chitra thought, but they teach us to grow and move forward with hope, resilience, and compassion. No matter what lies ahead, kindness and understanding will always be the threads that bind us together.
