"Finite players play within boundaries; infinite players play with boundaries." – James P. Carse,

Once, there were two friends, Rita and Gita. Rita was an average student, while Gita was a top achiever in school. One day, during lunch in their final year of high school, they started talking about their dreams.

Rita asked, "Gita, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

Gita smiled and said, "I want to be an engineer. What about you, Rita?"

Rita replied thoughtfully, "I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I love the idea of helping kids learn and grow."

The school bell rang, interrupting their conversation. They packed their lunch boxes and returned to class, promising to keep dreaming big.

Years passed, and their paths unfolded. Rita became a teacher, fulfilling her dream, while Gita achieved hers by becoming an engineer. Life moved forward, and both friends got married. But Rita’s journey took a turn; she had to leave teaching to care for her family and in-laws. Meanwhile, Gita continued working full-time as an engineer.

One day, they met again after 25 years at a family gathering. Rita greeted her friend warmly, "Hi Gita! It’s so nice to see you after all these years. How have you been?"

Gita beamed and replied, "Yes, it’s been so long! I’m doing well. How about you?"

Their conversation shifted to their children. Gita asked curiously, "So, Rita, what are your kids up to these days?"

Rita kindly shared, "I have two daughters. One is studying medicine, and the other has started her own startup company after completing her college."

Rita then asked in return, "And what about your kids, Gita?"

Gita smiled and said, "I have two sons. Both of them are running their own businesses."

As the evening went on, the two friends reflected on their lives. Gita asked thoughtfully, "Rita, do you ever miss teaching?"

Rita paused and said, "I do sometimes. But I’ve found joy in teaching my kids at home. It feels like I’m still helping them grow, just in a different way."

Gita nodded and said, "That’s wonderful. You’ve created your own way of teaching; an infinite game that never ends."

Rita smiled and added, "And you’ve built a career that keeps evolving; a finite game with clear goals."

Their conversation made them realize how life is a blend of infinite and finite games. Rita’s teaching at home was an infinite game; a journey without an end. Gita’s engineering career was a finite game; focused on achieving specific goals. Yet both found meaning and happiness in their choices.

As they parted ways that evening, Rita asked with a twinkle in her eye, "So, Gita, what’s your next move in your finite game?"

Gita laughed and replied, "I think I’ll start playing a bit more of the infinite one; spending more time with my family."

Rita smiled knowingly and said, "That sounds perfect."

Rita and Gita showed us that life is a beautiful mix of different paths and choices. Rita found happiness in teaching her own children at home and taking care of her in-laws, while Gita thrived in her career as an engineer. Their lives may have taken different turns, but they both found joy and meaning in their journeys. Meeting after so many years reminded them that whether life is an infinite game with no end or a finite game with clear goals, what truly matters is finding happiness in what you do. As they parted ways, their friendship remained strong, and their stories inspired each other to cherish every moment and keep dreaming big.
